2024 BILL TOWNSEND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

The Jackson Hole Snow Devils will again be offering scholarships to either graduating high school seniors or persons currently enrolled in college full time (12 semester credits), either physically or online. Scholarships will be given to the winners regardless of other grants or scholarships that the students may also receive.

Requirements are as follows:

  1. The applicant must submit the completed application form.
  2. The applicant must submit a cover letter.
  3. The applicant must submit a resume detailing his/her involvement in all extracurricular activities.
  4. The applicant must submit an essay (essay subject located on the application form). The essay MUST follow the format below to be accepted:
    1. Minimum of 2 pages – typed.
    2. Double-spaced.
    3. Font – Times New Roman.
    4. Font size – 12 points.
    5. Margins – set to 1 inch for all margins (top, bottom, left side, right side).
    6. Page numbers (if included) should be .5 inch from the top of the page (not within the 1” margin).
    7. A header (for example, the essay question) can be added 1 inch from the top of the 1st page, and then enter a double space and begin your essay.
    8. Do NOT include your name, OR the name of your club, school, town, business, etc…anywhere within the essay. For example, you should use “my local club”, “my high school”, “my local riding area”, and “my hometown”, instead of actual names.
      (NOTE: This information will be included within your application/resume/cover letter where applicable, just not within the essay).
    9. Do NOT use bold-faced type or other special settings.
    10. If work is cited, please add an additional ‘work-cited’ page at the end of the essay. This information will NOT be counted as part of the 2-page minimum.

2024 ESSAY TOPIC

Essays will be judged on depth of content, clarity, organization, and persuasiveness.

Essay Topic: How would you approach a land management agency (federal/state/private) when a trail system or riding area is threatened? Please use a current Travel Management Plan (Shoshone, Bridger-Teton, Bighorns, etc.…) of your choice as a basis for your essay.

Your essay should describe the problems briefly and offer an organized, well-argued plan of attack.

You may want to consider one or more of the following:

  • History of the system/area
  • Condition of the system/area
  • Ecosystems involved.
  • Other potential stakeholders
  • Options to closure or restriction/solutions to problems

Additional rules:

  1. Students must use the scholarship within one year of receiving it.
  2. All scholarship checks will be written directly to the college and not to the student ~ no exceptions.
  3. The student ID#, college name and address to send the scholarship check to, needs to be provided to Julie Hodges at Julie.ddtractoranddiesel@gmail.com by August 1st of the current year OR within 30 days of enrollment.

Any entry that does not meet ALL requirements will be disqualified.
